G is for Glimmers: Finding the Bright Spots in Your Day 🌟

Welcome back to our A–Z of Neurodivergence series.

This week, we’re celebrating something small but incredibly powerful: glimmers.

Glimmers are those tiny moments in a day that bring a sense of calm, joy, connection, or achievement. They can be quiet, gentle, and easy to miss - but they matter.

For neurodivergent individuals, families, and professionals, noticing glimmers can be a grounding, uplifting way to build confidence and wellbeing.

What are glimmers? 💬

A glimmer is any small moment that makes your nervous system feel safe or soothed.

It might be:

  • A favourite song

  • A warm cup of tea

  • A moment of quiet

  • A smile from someone you trust

  • Completing a task that felt hard

  • A calming sensory experience

  • A kind word or gesture

Glimmers are different for everyone. What matters is how you feel - even if the moment lasts only a few seconds.

Why glimmers matter, especially for neurodivergent wellbeing 🌟

Life can feel full of challenges: sensory overload, stressful environments, transitions, expectations, or masking.

Glimmers help balance this by offering moments of:

  • Hope

  • Calm

  • Confidence

  • Joy

  • Connection

  • Achievement

They also support:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Reduced anxiety

  • A more positive self‑image

  • Building resilience

Focusing on glimmers isn’t about ignoring challenges.

It’s about recognising the moments that help us feel grounded, safe, or proud - even on tough days.

Glimmers for children and young people 💛

Glimmers play a big role in helping children feel:

  • Valued

  • Capable

  • Safe

  • Understood

Professionals and families can help by noticing and naming glimmers out loud, such as:

  • “I saw how calmly you waited - that was brilliant.”

  • “You tried something new today, and I’m really proud of you.”

  • “You smiled when you heard your favourite song - that looked like a glimmer moment.”

These small reflections support emotional regulation, self-esteem, and a sense of identity.

Glimmers in professional settings 🤝

Teachers, support workers, and clinicians can make a huge difference by:

  • Spotting positive moments

  • Sharing them with families

  • Celebrating progress - big or small

  • Helping individuals recognise what feels good and why

Even a brief comment home like “They enjoyed story time today” can build trust and reassurance.

This creates a culture where strengths and successes are visible, not overshadowed by challenges.

Glimmers for parents and carers 💚

It’s easy for stress, appointments, or professional opinions to take centre stage.

Glimmers remind parents and carers that good moments are happening, even during difficult days.

Glimmers might be:

  • A calm bedtime

  • A peaceful drive

  • A shared laugh

  • A new skill emerging

  • A moment of connection

These small positives can help restore balance, reduce burnout, and offer hope.

Parents deserve glimmers too.

Practical ways to notice and celebrate glimmers ⭐

Here are simple, accessible ways to bring glimmers into everyday life:

1. Keep a Glimmer Journal ✨

Write down one small positive moment each day. It could be a feeling, a success, or something that made you smile.

2. Use visual reminders 🖼️

A jar of sticky notes, a whiteboard, or a photo collection can help capture moments that might otherwise be forgotten.

3. Celebrate small wins 🎉

Completed a task? Took a break before feeling overwhelmed? Tried something new? These are all glimmers.

4. Talk about glimmers together 👂

Families, classrooms, and teams can take a moment to share “a bright spot from today”.

5. Slow down enough to notice 🕊️

Glimmers are often quiet. Taking a small pause makes them easier to see.

Glimmers create connection 🌍

Glimmers remind us that even during stressful, busy, or overwhelming days, something good can still shine through. They build resilience, nurture confidence, and support emotional wellbeing.

And the more we look for glimmers, the more we notice them 💛💙💚
