August’s Communication Top Tip – Processing Time ⏳

This month’s Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) tip is all about patience.

Give Time to Think and Respond 💬

Neurodivergent individuals often need more time to process language.

That means understanding what’s being said, figuring out what they want to say back, and then finding the words to express it.

It’s not about not knowing - it’s about needing space to think.

Try this: After asking a question or giving an instruction, silently count to 10 in your head before repeating yourself. It might feel like a long pause to you, but to someone processing information, it’s a lifeline.

Why it helps:

  • Reduces pressure and anxiety 😰

  • Supports understanding 👍

  • Builds trust and confidence 🤝

  • Gives space for real communication 🗣️

Top Tip :Say something like “Take your time” or “I’m happy to wait” - it shows that you value their voice and their pace. 💡

Every brain works differently.

Giving people the time they need is a simple but powerful way to make communication more accessible for everyone.
