Every September, communities across the UK and around the world come together to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) — and to celebrate the strengths, resilience, and everyday achievements of those living with FASD.
FASD Awareness Month is a powerful reminder of the importance of understanding, prevention, and support — and of the amazing people behind the diagnosis.
💡 What Is FASD?
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong condition that can occur when a baby is exposed to alcohol in the womb.
It can affect:
Learning and memory
Attention and focus
Social and emotional development
Physical health and coordination
FASD is more common than many people realise — but with the right support, understanding, and early intervention, individuals with FASD can thrive.
📅 International FASD Awareness Day – 9th September
Each year, International FASD Awareness Day is marked on the 9th day of the 9th month, symbolising the nine months of pregnancy — and the importance of avoiding alcohol during this crucial time.
On this day, people across the globe wear red shoes, light up landmarks, share stories, and take part in activities to raise awareness and show support.
🎉 What’s Happening This Month?
FASD organisations across the UK have a packed month of events and awareness-raising opportunities planned — including activities designed to support individuals and families, challenge stigma, and help more people understand the condition.
From community events to online campaigns, there are plenty of ways for you and your loved ones to get involved.
💙 Why It Matters
Raising awareness helps ensure that:
✔️ Families get the support they need
✔️ Children are better understood and included
✔️ Stigma is replaced with compassion
✔️ Future cases of FASD can be prevented
Whether you're living with FASD, supporting someone who is, or simply want to be a better ally — your voice matters.
