“It’s not like I like it, but I feel like it’s part of me. I have made friends with it. And so now, I’m pretty confident in it.” - Billie Eilish, on living with Tourette’s Syndrome
Pop star Billie Eilish has been open about her experience with Tourette’s Syndrome — and this quote speaks volumes to the journey so many neurodivergent people go through.
At NEST, we talk a lot about acceptance, self-awareness, and building a positive relationship with how your brain works. Billie’s words capture something really important: you don’t have to “like” every part of your neurodivergence — but accepting it, understanding it, and making peace with it can be powerful.
🌱 From Frustration to Friendship
For many children, young people, and adults, discovering they are neurodivergent (whether through diagnosis or self-identification) can be a relief - but it can also come with a mix of emotions.
👉 “Why am I different?”
👉 “Why do I do that?”
👉 “Why does the world feel too loud, too bright, too fast?”
These are big, real questions - and like Billie, some people find peace not by fighting those parts of themselves, but by getting to know them.
💬 Making Friends With Your Brain
When Billie says, “I’ve made friends with it,” she’s modelling something incredibly healthy: neuro-affirmation. That means recognising your brain isn’t broken - it’s just wired differently.
It means learning:
What helps you feel regulated
What makes things harder
How to advocate for yourself
That you’re not alone in the way you experience the world
🌈 The Power of Self-Acceptance
There’s strength in self-awareness. There’s freedom in naming what you need. And there’s real joy in finding people, tools, and environments that don’t just tolerate you -but celebrate you.
Whether you’re living with ADHD, autism, Tourette’s, dyspraxia, dyslexia, or you’re still figuring things out - your brain is part of you. And like Billie, you can make peace with it. You can grow in confidence. And you can build a life where you thrive.
💙 You're Not Alone
At NEST, we support families, young people, and professionals across Ayrshire who are on this journey too. Whether you're newly navigating a diagnosis, seeking support, or just trying to make sense of your sensory world — we’re here, and we see you.
📢 Final Word?
Billie said it best: “I’ve made friends with it.” And maybe that’s where the power really begins.
