💜 Meet Angus: Embracing Neurodiversity with Honesty and Heart 💜

Updated: Jun 13

As we begin Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2025, we’re honoured to share the voice of Angus, a young man who speaks with courage, clarity, and compassion about his experience of being neurodivergent.

Angus’s story is a powerful reminder that being different is not a limitation—it’s a strength. Through his own words, he invites us to better understand autism, celebrate individuality, and embrace the beauty of neurodiversity.

“With autism, you might not understand this when you first get diagnosed, but there are so many people who are just like me and just like you… It’s just who we are. And we have to accept that.” – Angus

Angus shares how being autistic can sometimes feel isolating, especially when others don’t fully understand. But instead of letting that discourage him, he focuses on what brings him joy—like space, football, science, and maths. These passions are part of what makes him unique, and he encourages others to find and celebrate their own.

💬 Understanding and Empathy

Angus also reflects on how he relates to other autistic children at school, recognising when they might need a moment to themselves. His empathy and insight highlight the importance of giving people space and understanding—something we can all learn from.

“Sometimes they just need a little minute. And if that’s what they need, then they definitely deserve their own time.” - Angus

🌈 Neurodivergent Role Models

Angus reminds us that many well-known figures are neurodivergent—like Greta Thunberg, Lionel Messi, Daniel Radcliffe, and Walt Disney. But he’s quick to point out that being neurodivergent doesn’t make anyone better or more special than others.

“Everybody has this little something that makes them themselves. Everybody is unique in their own cool way.” - Angus

📢 A Note on Personal Stories

This story is shared in Angus’s own words and reflects his personal experience. It has not been written or influenced by NEST or NHS Ayrshire & Arran. We’re simply helping to amplify his voice as part of our celebration of Neurodiversity Week.
