Recently, we posed a question to our NEST community:
“If you could describe neurodiversity in one word, what would it be?”
The aim was to spark reflection and conversation, and you delivered. From the joyful and playful to the serious and powerful, your words offered a glimpse into the many ways neurodiversity is felt and experienced. Here are just a few of the responses that stood out, and why they matter.
Ostracised 🖤
One person offered the word ostracised, a painful but important reflection. It’s a stark reminder that for many neurodivergent people, exclusion and isolation are real and ongoing experiences. Recognising this truth helps us understand the emotional toll that comes from not being accepted or supported in neurotypical spaces. It's a call to action to create a more inclusive world.
Spicy ❤️🔥
On the lighter side, someone chose spicy, a bold and brilliant way to capture the vibrant, dynamic energy that neurodiversity can bring. Neurodivergent minds often break the mould, offering new ideas, unique humour, and unforgettable personality. This word reminds us that difference can be delicious, powerful, and full of flavour.
Confusion😵
Confusion came up too, and it’s a very real part of the neurodivergent experience, especially when trying to navigate a world that isn’t always designed with accessibility in mind. Whether it’s sensory overload, unclear expectations, or social complexity, the feeling of being confused is something many in our community know all too well. It highlights the need for clearer communication, patience, and understanding.
Brilliant 💡
Then there was brilliant, a word that shines a light on the strengths and creativity so often overlooked. Neurodivergent people often have extraordinary talents, problem-solving abilities, and insights that challenge the status quo. This word reminds us to celebrate those strengths and make space for brilliance to thrive.
Unique 🌟
Unique was another favourite, and with good reason. Neurodiversity isn’t about ticking boxes or fitting into categories. It’s about celebrating the individuality of each person’s brain, personality, and way of being. Every neurodivergent journey is different, and that uniqueness is something to be valued, not hidden.
Innovative 🧠
Innovative is a word that speaks to the heart of how many neurodivergent individuals think and create. It’s about fresh perspectives, new ideas, and seeing things in ways others might not. Neurodiversity brings with it a richness of thought that drives progress and reimagines what’s possible.
Whirlwind 🌪️
One community member shared whirlwind, a vivid word that paints a picture of the fast-paced, unpredictable, and often intense experience of being neurodivergent. Life can feel like a whirlwind of thoughts, emotions, and sensory input. But even in the chaos, there’s beauty and momentum.
They added, “I wouldn’t change it for the world”, a powerful expression of self-acceptance and pride in identity. Embracing the whirlwind means embracing all the colour, complexity, and creativity that comes with it.
Every Word Tells a Story
Whether hopeful, heavy, or full of humour, each word our community shared reflects a different aspect of neurodiversity. Together, they create a patchwork of experience, of strength and struggle, joy and growth.
We’re so grateful to everyone who took part and shared their word. It’s these honest, diverse voices that help us better understand the world through a neurodivergent lens.
