Parent Awareness of Learning Disabilities Support (PALS) 💙

A free, supportive course for parents and carers

Supporting a child with a learning disability can be both deeply rewarding and, at times, challenging. Many parents and carers tell us they want clearer information, practical guidance, and reassurance that they are not alone on this journey.

That’s why NEST Ayrshire is pleased to offer Parent Awareness of Learning Disabilities Support (PALS) – a free course designed to empower parents and carers with knowledge, confidence and supportive connections.

What is PALS?

PALS is a six‑session course created by NHS Ayrshire & Arran Clinical Psychologists and delivered by the Clinical Psychology Service in partnership with NEST.

The course aims to help parents and carers:

  • Build a shared understanding of learning (intellectual) disabilities

  • Feel more confident supporting their child’s development

  • Develop practical strategies that can be used at home

  • Reflect on their own wellbeing as a parent or carer

PALS is not about “fixing” children. It is about understanding, supporting strengths, and feeling better equipped to navigate everyday challenges.

Who is the course for?

PALS is for parents and carers of children and young people up to the age of 16 who:

  • Have a diagnosis of an intellectual (learning) disability, or

  • Are in the process of assessment, or

  • Have had a diagnosis within the last few years

You do not need to have specialist knowledge or experience. The course is welcoming, inclusive and designed to meet families where they are.

What the course covers

Each session focuses on a different topic, allowing time for discussion, reflection and questions.

Session topics include:

  1. What it means to have a learning disability

  2. Supporting your child’s development

  3. Communication

  4. Managing behaviour

  5. Supporting yourself as a parent or carer

Sessions are relaxed and interactive, with opportunities to share experiences if you feel comfortable. Many parents value being in a space with others who understand similar joys and challenges.

  • Start date: Tuesday 20 January 2026

  • Time: 10am–12pm

  • Location: Volunteer Rooms, Irvine

Why parents tell us PALS helps

Parents who attend PALS often say they:

  • Feel more confident and informed

  • Have a better understanding of their child’s needs

  • Learn practical strategies they can use straight away

  • Feel reassured that their experiences are valid

  • Value connecting with other parents in a similar situation

The focus throughout is on empowerment, understanding and recognising the strengths of both children and families.
