Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most talked about - and misunderstood - neurodevelopmental difference.
Despite growing awareness, many myths still surround ADHD, often leaving people feeling judged, overlooked, or dismissed.
At NEST, we believe understanding is the first step toward acceptance.
Lets take a look at some common myths and the realities behind them 👇
Myth 1: ADHD is just being lazy or unmotivated 🦥
Reality: ADHD isn't about lack of effort - it's about differences in how the brain manages attention, motivation, and regulation. People with ADHD can be incredibly capable and hardworking, but may struggle with focus, organisation, and follow-through due to how their brain processes information and stimulation.
Myth 2: ADHD only affects children 👶
Reality: ADHD is a lifelong condition. Many adults go undiagnosed until later in life, often after years of feeling "different" or struggling to manage daily routines. Recognising ADHD in adults is key to understanding patterns of burnout, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm that often trace back to unrecognised neurodivergence.
Myth 3: Everyone gets distracted - it's not a "real" condition 🙄
Reality: Everyone loses focus sometimes, but ADHD goes beyond ordinary distraction. It impacts executive functions - the brain skills that help us to plan, start, and finish tasks. These challenges can make everyday life feel much harder, even when someone is trying their best.
Myth 4: People with ADHD can't focus 🔎
Reality: It not a lack of focus, but a difference in how focus works. Many people with ADHD experience hyperfocus - intense concentration on something interesting or rewarding - while struggling to stay engaged in less stimulating tasks. It's not a choice: its how the ADHD brain regulates attention.
Myth 5: Medication fixes everything 💊
Reality: Medication can be an important part of ADHD management but it's not a cure. Support often includes therapy coaching self understanding routines and community connexion Every individual whose needs are different and effective ADHD support looks at the whole person not just the symptoms
Myth 6: ADHD looks the same in everyone 🧑🤝🧑
Reality: ADHD is incredibly diverse. Some people are energetic and outwardly impulsive; Others are quiet daydreaming or emotionally intense. Gender environment and life experience all shape how ADHD presents - which is why understanding individual needs is so important.
Why It Matters 🗨️
Challenging myths helps reduce stigma and creates more supportive environments for neurodivergent people When we replace judgement with understanding we make space to thrive at home in school and at work.
