At NEST, we’re passionate about creating inclusive communities — and we’re excited to highlight a fantastic initiative that’s doing just that right here in Ayrshire.
Over 20 Communication Boards have recently been installed in parks, beaches, and woodland areas across the region, thanks to the incredible work of the South Ayrshire Communication Friendly Environments (SACFE) team.
These boards are designed to support individuals with speech, language, and communication needs, helping them to express themselves more easily in public spaces.
What Are Communication Boards?
Communication boards are visual tools that use a combination of pictures, symbols, and words to help people communicate. Whether someone is non-verbal, has limited speech, or is living with conditions like dementia or autism, these boards offer a way to connect, share, and be understood.
They’re already making a meaningful impact — sparking conversations, encouraging interaction, and even helping to unlock memories for older adults.
Where Can You Find Them?
You’ll spot these boards in a variety of well-loved locations, including:
🏖️ Ayr, Prestwick, Troon & Girvan beaches
🌳 Belleisle & Rozelle parks
🌲 Fullarton woods
🏟️ Northfield and other community venues
These locations were carefully chosen to ensure that people of all ages and abilities can benefit from accessible communication while enjoying the outdoors.
A Community Effort
This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local businesses, organisations, and the wider community. It’s a shining example of what we can achieve when we work together to make our spaces more inclusive.
At NEST, we’re proud to support and celebrate projects like this that align with our mission of empowering individuals and promoting equality.
