How to Support Someone Who Masks 🎭

For many neurodivergent people, masking can feel like second nature. It’s the act of hiding natural behaviours, needs, or traits in order to blend in or feel safe. While it can help in the moment, masking often comes at a cost: exhaustion, stress, and sometimes even a sense of losing one’s true self.
So how can we, as friends, family members, colleagues, and communities, offer support?
1. Create Spaces Free from Judgement
When people know they won’t be judged for stimming, needing quiet time, or communicating in their own way, they’re less likely to feel the need to mask. Small gestures - like being open to different communication styles - can make a huge difference.
2. Respect Autonomy and Preferences
Ask, don’t assume. Whether it’s about eye contact, social interaction, or sensory needs, respecting someone’s preferences sends the message: “You don’t have to hide here.”
3. Offer Breaks and Downtime
Masking takes energy. Encourage (and model!) the importance of breaks, rest, and time to recharge. This is especially important in workplaces and schools where the pressure to “keep going” can be intense.
4. Listen and Believe
If someone shares that they are masking, take it seriously. Masking is often invisible from the outside, but that doesn’t make the impact any less real. Listening without minimising builds trust and safety.
5. Celebrate Authenticity
Whether it’s through recognising unique strengths, encouraging self-expression, or simply accepting someone as they are, celebrating authenticity helps dismantle the pressure to conform.
Why This Matters
Supporting someone who masks isn’t about “fixing” them - it’s about creating an environment where they don’t feel they have to. When people can show up authentically, everyone benefits: communities grow stronger, workplaces become more creative, and individuals thrive.
At NEST, we believe inclusion means more than just awareness. It’s about building spaces where people don’t need to wear a mask to feel accepted. 💙
