September’s Communication Top Tip: Be Face to Face 👀

Every month, our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) colleagues share a simple top tip to support communication.

These tips are designed to help children and young people feel more confident, understood, and included in everyday interactions.

This month’s tip is: be face-to-face with your wee people when playing and talking.

Why this matters 💬

  • Shows you’re interested – Being at the same level helps children know you’re focused on them and what they’re saying.

  • Builds connection – Eye contact and shared focus create a stronger bond and encourage back-and-forth conversation.

  • Supports understanding – Seeing facial expressions and gestures makes it easier for children to understand the meaning behind words.

How to try it 🤝

  • Sit down on the floor during play so you’re at eye level.

  • Position yourself in front of them when talking, instead of calling out across the room.

  • Use open body language and smiles to show you’re engaged.

It’s a small change, but being face-to-face can make a big difference in how children communicate, learn, and feel connected.
