Every month, our Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) colleagues share a simple top tip to support communication.
These tips are designed to help children and young people feel more confident, understood, and included in everyday interactions.
This month’s tip is: be face-to-face with your wee people when playing and talking.
Why this matters 💬
Shows you’re interested – Being at the same level helps children know you’re focused on them and what they’re saying.
Builds connection – Eye contact and shared focus create a stronger bond and encourage back-and-forth conversation.
Supports understanding – Seeing facial expressions and gestures makes it easier for children to understand the meaning behind words.
How to try it 🤝
Sit down on the floor during play so you’re at eye level.
Position yourself in front of them when talking, instead of calling out across the room.
Use open body language and smiles to show you’re engaged.
It’s a small change, but being face-to-face can make a big difference in how children communicate, learn, and feel connected.
