This month’s Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) tip is all about helping your wee one make sense of what comes next.
Build Stories Into Your Day: Understanding “what happens next” is a big part of communication and early language development. It helps children learn how to organise their thoughts, follow routines, and eventually tell their own stories.
It’s not just about books - it’s about everyday life.
Try this: When reading, talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story. When you’re doing everyday tasks - like brushing your teeth or going to the shop - talk about what’s just happened and what’s coming up next.
Why does it help?
Builds understanding of sequences 🔗
Supports memory and attention 🧠
Helps with emotional regulation (knowing what to expect!) 🛟
Encourages expressive language 🗣️
Top Tip: Use words like “first,” “then,” “after,” and “finally” to help structure the conversation. 💡
Big conversations often start with small, simple moments, and talking about what happens next is one of the best ways to support your child’s language development.
