This month’s Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) tip is a gentle reminder: perfection isn’t the goal - confidence is.
Correct Without Correcting: When your child says a word the “wrong” way, maybe they say “tat” instead of “cat”, it’s tempting to correct them straight away. But too much pressure can make communication feel stressful and discourage them from trying again.
Instead, you can model the right sound without making it a big deal.
Try this: If your child says, “Look at the tat!” You might respond with: “Yes, that’s a lovely cat.”
By hearing the correct word naturally repeated back, they’re more likely to pick it up over time, without feeling corrected or embarrassed.
Why it helps:
Builds confidence and self-esteem 🌟
Encourages natural language learning 🌱
Keeps communication pressure-free 🫶
Supports sound awareness in a safe way 👂
Top Tip: Keep your tone relaxed, warm, and encouraging. Your child is learning all the time - even when they don’t get it quite right. 💡
