March’s Communication Top Tip – Join In and Play 🧸

Updated: Aug 6

This month’s Speech & Language Therapy (SLT) tip is a simple but powerful one: get down on the floor and join the fun!

Why Play Matters: Playing with your wee one isn’t just bonding, it’s how they learn to communicate. Copying their play, making sounds together, and responding to their actions all build connection, trust, and early language skills.

It doesn’t need to be structured. The more natural the play, the better.

Try this: Get the same toy they’re using, like a ball or a car, and start copying what they do. Make it a game! Sit face to face, get on their level, and wait for them to react. This back-and-forth is the start of a real conversation.

Why it helps:

  • Builds shared attention 👀

  • Supports turn-taking and eye contact 🔄

  • Boosts confidence in making sounds and gestures 🎤

  • Shows that communication is fun and meaningful💬

Top Tip: Be face to face and let them take the lead - even the smallest action or sound is worth responding to. 💡

Every interaction is a chance to connect. By joining in with their play, you’re laying the foundation for strong, confident communication.
