October Communication Top Tip: Make Screen Time Meaningful

As the darker evenings roll in and routines shift, it’s the perfect time to slow down and reconnect with your little ones.

This month’s top tip from our friends at NHS Ayrshire & Arran Speech and Language Therapy is all about turning everyday moments - like watching TV - into opportunities for bonding and learning.

Watch Together, Talk Together 📺

Instead of screen time being a solo activity, try watching something together. Whether it’s a favourite cartoon, a nature documentary, or a family film, sitting down side by side gives you the chance to:

  • Talk about what’s happening on screen

  • Ask questions and share reactions

  • Introduce new words and ideas

  • Laugh and enjoy the moment together

These small interactions help build language skills, emotional connection, and confidence - all while keeping things relaxed and fun.

Why It Matters 💬

Children learn best through interaction. By chatting about what you’re watching, you’re helping them make sense of the world, expand their vocabulary, and feel heard. It’s not about limiting screen time - it’s about making it count.

Cosy Up and Connect 🧣

So grab a blanket, pop on something you both enjoy, and make the most of these cosy autumn evenings. It’s a simple way to turn screen time into quality time.

Let’s keep sharing these small but powerful tips that support families across Ayrshire.
