Why Self-Care Matters for Neurodivergent People 🌱
At NEST, we understand that self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially for those who experience the world differently. From sensory sensitivities to burnout, life can be overwhelming.
That’s why it’s so important to find ways of caring for yourself that actually work for you.
Here are six simple but meaningful self-care tips we recommend for neurodivergent individuals. 💚
1. Create a Routine 📅
Consistency can reduce anxiety and help you feel more in control. Whether it’s knowing when you’re going to eat, work, or rest, having a rhythm to your day makes things more predictable and less stressful.
Try This: Use visual planners, alarms, or sticky notes to structure your day in a way that suits your brain.
2. Take Sensory Breaks 🛑
When the world gets loud, bright, or just too much, your body lets you know. Taking sensory breaks can help regulate your nervous system and prevent overwhelm.
Try This: Have a quiet corner, noise-cancelling headphones or fidget tools ready when you need it.
3. Socialise on Your Terms 💬
Social situations can be exhausting, even if you enjoy them! It’s okay to say no, leave early, or only engage when it feels right for you.
Try This: Plan low-pressure hangouts like a walk or a shared interest activity. Let trusted friends know your needs ahead of time.
4. Prioritise Sleep😴
Good sleep isn’t always easy to come by, but it plays a big role in your wellbeing. From mood to executive function, rest makes a big difference.
Try This: Build a calming bedtime routine, dim the lights, switch off screens, or listen to calming music.
5. Engage in Special Interests 🎨
Special interests are more than hobbies, they’re sources of comfort, joy, and connection. Give yourself permission to dive into the things you love.
Try This: Whether it’s painting, coding, dinosaurs, or K-pop, schedule time just for your interests. They recharge you!
6. Set Boundaries 🚧
Saying “no” is self-care too. Boundaries protect your time, energy, and comfort. They help you stay connected to what you need and how you want to be treated.
Try This: Practice saying things like, “I need some time to myself,” or “That doesn’t work for me right now.”
You Deserve Care and Respect 🌟
Self-care looks different for everyone, but for neurodivergent individuals, it’s about honouring your needs and protecting your energy. Whether you do one thing from this list or all six, remember: your wellbeing matters. 💖
