Things to Remember When Routines Change 🔄

Whether it’s starting a new school term, a holiday break, or something unexpected, changes to routine can feel like a big deal, especially for neurodivergent individuals.

And here’s the thing: it’s okay if it isn’t smooth sailing from day one.

If your family is navigating a change right now, here are some gentle reminders to help you through it.

1. It’s okay for things to feel rough at first 💛

Even positive changes can be exhausting. Ups and downs are normal; they’re not a sign you’re doing anything wrong.

2. Change takes time ⏳

Adjusting isn’t instant.

Some people may need days or even weeks before a new routine feels comfortable.

Be patient with the process.

3. Familiar anchors help 🏡

Holding onto little bits of the old routine, such as a favourite breakfast, story, or walk, can bring comfort when everything else feels different.

4. You don’t have to pretend it’s easy 💬

It’s okay to acknowledge that a change might feel tricky.

Honest, calm conversations can help everyone feel heard and supported.

5. Progress might not be linear 📉📈

You might have a good day followed by a harder one.

That’s all part of adjusting.

Celebrate small wins along the way.

6. Your needs matter too 🌿

Change impacts the whole family, not just the person experiencing it most intensely. Make sure you have support and moments to recharge.

Whatever the change looks like, remember, you and your family have navigated challenges before, and you can do it again.

Take it one step at a time, lean on your supports, and remind yourself that it’s okay to have tough days along the way.

This season will settle, and you’ll find your new rhythm. 💙
